Histology Technician Job Description:

General Summary of Duties: Accurately and efficiently prepares tissue samples through grossing, embedding and microtomy. Performs both special stains and immunostaining procedures. Serves as a resource person to peer Histotechnicians and laboratory assistants.

• Must possess knowledge of histotechnology.

• Applies meticulous attention to detail and critical thinking skills.

• Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.

• Dependability, flexibility and adaptability are required.

• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with peers, management, and physician staff.

• Must be able to cut 35 blocks an hour

• High School Diploma

• Three years of histology experience preferred.

• ASCP certification preferred.

• Grossing experience preferred. Associate’s Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.

Job Type: Full-time

Position #1-HOURS: 02:00pm – 10:30pm M-F (Primarily grossing)

Position #2-HOURS: 10:00pm - 6:30am M-F (Routine embedding and Microtomy)

General Summary of Duties: Assists and supports the technical staff with daily work assignments.

• Accurately and expediently sorts, accessions, receives, verifies, logs, and collects patient requisitions and specimens for technical testing.

• Opens and inspects all specimens to assure an accurate specimen count.

• Verifies patient requisitions for completeness of patient, client, and insurance information.

• Troubleshooting cases to include contacting clients to verify specific information for patient care while maintaining professionalism. Checks daily work for clerical accuracy, reporting errors to the supervisor.

• Prepares and sorts patient requisitions, and identifies and interprets data to be entered into the information system.

• Follows proper procedures with specimen rejection, if patient, client, and insurance information is submitted incorrectly on source.

• Labels requisitions, specimen containers, and slides.

• Performs embedding of routine derm specimens, embedding experience preffered.

• Distribute daily routine workflow and continuous ordering of pending procedures and distribution of doctors’ orders.

• Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstation.

• Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed. Maintains appropriate statistical logs and worksheets including laboratory equipment logs.

• Files, and retrieves, blocks, slides and specimens.

• Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.

• Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.

• Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent work experience.

• A minimum of 1 year experience preferred.

• Must be able to multi-task effectively and prioritize.

• Applies meticulous attention to detail and critical thinking skills.

• Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.

• Dependability, flexibility and adaptability are required.

• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with peers, management, and physician staff.

• Computer skills required Skill in typing 45 WPM.
